Commission Complete!
I was finally able to get the commission done. You can see a picture below – took a quick picture of it as I wanted to get it shipped out. I am happy with how it turned out. The colours are not quite mine, but they fit to the person who commissioned it. I will ask for a picture of it in use in the room it was made for.
Record Keeping
After the guild meeting this week, I realize I need a better system of tracking my quilts. I have most of them photographed, but have not organized or recorded information on them. I have tried to put them in a book, but keeping that updated seems to be a bit of a chore. I am thinking of adding a category here and posting them here. Will have to test a few things out, figure out what information I want to record for each quilt.
I at minimum, I will need to record the name, date, pattern, who quilted it. Maybe type of material used, size, who I have given it to and so on. Might – create a drupal site to do the recording of my quilts. Set up a content type for them and then enter the information I want to record. Will play with some ideas this month and see what I like most. Something online would be nice as I can then access it from anywhere when I want some information. The hard part with any process though, is to keep it up to date. I have starting a quilt numbering system, with quilts I have done for my business (Quilts by Scott) these include client quilts however. I do want to document them as well, but want to keep them private unless the customer is okay with me posting information about their quilt. There is a good recording sheet at the Lighthouse Quilt Guild - http://www.lighthousequiltguild.org/forms/LHQG-QuiltRecord.pdf.
Update: Quilt Show Challenge Fabric
I was able to play with the ScanN’Cut that Monica lent me. I have the Torii legs, moon, and yellow cherry blossoms cut out using it. I also have one branch cut, will need to do one more and a few cherry blossom petals to cut out.
The ScanN’Cut is quite easy to use, just limited to 12” x 12”, thus I had to cut the roof of the Torii by hand so it did not have a seam, but it was mostly straight lines and thus quite easy to get. Here are some pictures of the scan in cut in action.
Here is a rough (very) layout and I still need to fussy cut the owls, I should get the rest of the cutting done by the weekend. Will have to play with layout then fuse it down, then appliqué it all and thread-paint the blossoms. Have some done tests with this and am quite happy with how it should turn out.
I am being minimal in the parts, don’t want to over complicate the image. I am not sure how I want to quilt it, but am leaning to horizontal lines in the purple and circles in the moon. I am leaning towards no quilting on the Torii to keep a silhouette. This is turning out to be a very romantic image, which I am happy about. It is tranquil and a place that would be nice to visit.
Lots of work to do before the guild show
My mood has been fluctuating between down and angry. I need to get moving on some of my quilt projects. I have finally gotten a commission quilted (will show it off at tonight’s guild meeting). However, I don’t have the correct fabric to bind it, will have to get that this week. It needs to be sent off to the client ASAP. Once I have it done, I will get some pictures posted.
The pattern is an antique charm quilt called “Bars and Zig Zag” published in the Special Spring 2013 edition of Quiltmania.
Art Group - design challenge
The Art Quilt group I belong to has decided to go through 5 Art Design Primer lessons that were presented in Quilting Arts Magazine, the first one was published in the Fall 2006 issue, Lesson I: Unity & Focual Point.
The exercises given in the article are:
- Create a unified composition by repeating shape or colour.
- Create a unified composition with mostly horizontal or vertical lines.
- Create one composition emphasizing unity, another emphasizing variety.
- Using five random shapes, create unity through proximity.
- Create a focal point using contrast of colour, line, or detail.
- Create a focal point contrasting realistic/abstract, open/complex, size, or detail.
- Create a focal point using placement.
- Create a focal point using isolation.
I have done three of these so far, hope to get the rest done by the next art group meeting.
