Miranda and Dave - wedding quilt

This quilt I started in 2003 or so and it was a quilt that I had many problems with,  I finally got Creative Sisters to quilt it, just to get it finished.  This was another quilt that made me think about getting my own long arm.  This quilt no longer had a home as the person I was going to give it to is no longer in my life, I then met a wonderful couple Miranda and Dave.  They got married in August of 2014 and I thought it would make a great wedding present.  They loved it and have been told they use it on their bed.

I love the colours, the design is just a simple rail fence, with a simple quilting pattern.

My Mom's Quilt

In 2012, I made a quilt for my mom.  This is one of the quilts that lead me to getting a long arm sewing machine to do my quilting.  The pattern is from Marsha McCloskey’s Quick Classic Quilts – Four-Patch to Feathered Stars.  Burgoyne Surrounded.

After all the work of cutting and piecing the small bits, I felt odd about handing it off to someone else (in this case it was Creative Sisters in Waterloo) to quilt it.  While they did a great job and I love the pattern used, it was just not done by me and I thought, if I were to enter any quilts into a show, I would need to do the quilting on my own.

Working on website and blogs

I am working on setting up my website for my business and personal.  I  have scottschau.ca and quiltsbyscott.ca – was using scottschau.ca as my business site, but thought I should move it to quiltsbyscott.ca and then redirect scottschau.ca to there.

Will have to work to get some pictures of my work posted.  If anyone has suggestions on how to make my sites better let me know.

Commission Complete!

I was finally able to get the commission done.  You can see a picture below – took a quick picture of it as I wanted to get it shipped out.  I am happy with how it turned out.  The colours are not quite mine, but they fit to the person who commissioned it.  I will ask for a picture of it in use in the room it was made for.

Record Keeping

After the guild meeting this week, I realize I need a better system of tracking my quilts.  I have most of them photographed, but have not organized or recorded information on them.  I have tried to put them in a book, but keeping that updated seems to be a bit of a chore.  I am thinking of adding a category here and posting them here.  Will have to test a few things out, figure out what information I want to record for each quilt.

I at minimum, I will need to record the name, date, pattern, who quilted it.  Maybe type of material used, size, who I have given it to and so on.   Might – create a drupal site to do the recording of my quilts.  Set up a content type for them and then enter the information I want to record.  Will play with some ideas this month and see what I like most.  Something online would be nice as I can then access it from anywhere when I want some information.  The hard part with any process though, is to keep it up to date.  I have starting a quilt numbering system, with quilts I have done for my business (Quilts by Scott) these include client quilts however.  I do want to document them as well, but want to keep them private unless the customer is okay with me posting information about their quilt.  There is a good recording sheet at the Lighthouse Quilt Guild - http://www.lighthousequiltguild.org/forms/LHQG-QuiltRecord.pdf.
